Biography

He mostly feels interested in sciences (computer science, biology, aeronautics) since he comes across « Giant steps » (J. Coltrane) & « Kind of Blue » (M. Davis) albums, brought to home by his sister. At 14 years old, it is an emotional shock, music really becomes essential. He starts to play the saxophone at the local brass band, while listening to all jazz records found at the public librairy.

After having passed a scientific General Certificate, he definitely takes a direction towards music ; he studies at the national conservatory of music in his hometown (classical and jazz music) while following university studies in musicology. Some enriching years during when he will come into contact with many different music styles, from Josquin des Prés to Georges Russel.

This academic route led him to a PhD on Coltrane (in progress at the Sorbonne University with Laurent Cugny), to the National superior conservatory of Paris and finally to the Berklee College of Music (Boston, USA).

In 1997, he forms a quartet with Oli Bott, a german vibraphon player met at Berklee. They play together since then across Germany, either in jazz clubs or festivals. They won several music prize in national and international competitions (Europ´Jazz Contest, NDR Musikpreis, Leipzig Improvisation Competition).

Spectacular evolution of computer applications allowing new music emergence, he also feels interested in all this stammering styles : drum'n bass, acid jazz, jungle, while going on to develop in acoustic jazz.

In 2001, he embarks in the adventure by setting up his own studio and tests a fusion of jazz and electronic materials : the album “ Listen to the music!” is released in 2006 and is a big success on the electronic scene.

At the same time, Bertrand works as an arranger/composer/performer for labels such as Universal music and as a producer in various styles of music (electronic music, hip-hop, rock) within his recording studio.

In 2007, back to acoustic jazz ! He starts a trio and compose an ambitious repertoire : the album “Between the night and day light” is released in 2008. The band brings it contribution to the “art of trio” and is stylistically between the famous trios Celea/Liebman/Reisinger and Marsalis/TainWatts/Veal.
